Idaho practice tests
The Idaho Class D knowledge test has 40 questions taken from the Idaho Driver's Handbook, and you can miss up to 6, so you need 34 correct. Teens under 17 take driver training from 14 and a half, then drive at least six months and 50 hours (10 at night) on a supervised instruction permit; applicants 17 and older can get a one-year Class D instruction permit after passing the test. Our free Idaho practice sets follow the real format, 40 questions with 34 to pass, and every answer comes from the Idaho Driver's Handbook (July 2026 edition).

| Questions | 40 questionsThe handbook says the Class D knowledge test consists of 40 questions and that the questions are taken directly from information in the Driver's Handbook. It warns that web-based practice tests do not accurately represent the Idaho test, except the sample questions ITD itself provides. The handbook's own 20 practice questions are multiple choice. | Idaho Driver's Handbook (July 2026), PDFchecked 2026-11-01 |
| To pass | 34 of 40 correct (miss no more than 6)The handbook says you can miss up to six questions before failing the test, which is 85%. Our practice sets use the same rule: 40 questions, 34 correct to pass. | Idaho Driver's Handbook (July 2026), PDFchecked 2026-11-01 |
| Signs part | Part of the one knowledge test; no separate pass markThe handbook describes a single 40-question knowledge test with one pass mark and does not set a separate signs section or say how many sign questions appear, so our sets mix seven sign-picture questions into each test of 40. | Idaho Driver's Handbook (July 2026), PDFchecked 2026-11-01 |
| Time limit | Not statedThe handbook gives no time limit for the knowledge test. Our sets have no time limit. | Idaho Driver's Handbook (July 2026), PDFchecked 2026-11-01 |
| Languages | English, Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, French, Korean, Russian, Serbo-Croatian, Spanish, Swahili, Vietnamese and American Sign LanguageThe ITD test page lists the same languages as the handbook: English, Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, French, Korean, Russian, Serbo-Croatian, Spanish, Swahili and Vietnamese, each written and aural (read aloud), plus American Sign Language by video. A translator may be used only if your language is not offered, or if you have tried the test at least three times in an offered language and cannot pass. The translator cannot be a family member, may only read the questions and answers, and you choose your own answers. | Idaho Transportation Department: Taking the Driver's Testchecked 2026-11-01 |
| Testing room rules | No phones, smart watches, headphones, notes or talkingThe ITD test page says electronic devices of any kind, driver manuals or notes, talking with others, interpreters unless authorized, and leaving the testing area other than to go to an examiner are not allowed. Children and bags are allowed at the county office's discretion. | Idaho Transportation Department: Taking the Driver's Testchecked 2026-11-01 |
| Where you test | At a county driver's license officeIdaho licenses, permits and ID cards are issued through the county sheriff's driver's license offices, where applicants take the vision screening and knowledge test. The handbook does not describe an online knowledge test. Class D skills tests are given by third-party examiners whom you contact yourself. | Idaho Driver's Handbook (July 2026), PDFchecked 2026-11-01 |
| Minimum age | 14 and a half for a driver training permit; 15 to be licensed; 17 for a Class D instruction permitApplicants under 17 must finish approved driver training (30 hours of classroom, 6 hours of in-car observation and 6 hours behind the wheel) and the graduated driver's license program. Applicants must be at least 15 to take the knowledge and skills tests. Applicants under 18 need a liability signer (a parent or legal guardian) and a verification of school compliance. | Idaho Driver's Handbook (July 2026), PDFchecked 2026-11-01 |
| Supervised instruction permit (under 17) | At least 6 months and 50 hours of supervised driving, 10 at night; supervisor 21 or older beside youAfter driver training the teen begins a violation-free supervised instruction period of at least six months. The supervisor must be a licensed driver at least 21 in the front seat beside the permit holder, with no other passengers in the front seat, and all occupants must be belted. A traffic conviction during this period cancels the permit, and a new six-month period starts with a new permit. | Idaho Driver's Handbook (July 2026), PDFchecked 2026-11-01 |
| Class D instruction permit (17 and older) | Pass the knowledge test; valid one year; practice with a licensed adult 18 or olderApplicants 17 or older may take driver training on a driver training permit or on the Class D instruction permit. | Young driver restrictions | Under 16: daylight only unless a licensed driver 21 or older is beside you; under 17: one passenger under 17 for the first 6 monthsThe handbook defines daylight as 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. The passenger limit does not count passengers related to the driver by blood, adoption or marriage. Drivers under 17 get a warning letter for a first moving violation conviction, a 30-day suspension for a second and a 60-day suspension for a third or later. Licenses issued at 15 to 17 expire five days after the 18th birthday. | Idaho Driver's Handbook (July 2026), PDFchecked 2026-11-01 |

| What to bring | Proof of identity and age, Social Security number, proof of Idaho residency, proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful presenceThe ITD required documents page says photocopies and laminated documents are not accepted, photo identity documents may be up to five years past their expiration date, and residency proof must show your name and principal Idaho address and be from the last 12 months (cell phone bills are not accepted). Your Social Security number is verified electronically, and if you have changed your name you must update it with the Social Security Administration first. Two proofs of residency are needed for a Star Card. Applicants under 17 also bring proof of driver training and of the supervised period, applicants under 18 bring a liability signer and a verification of school compliance, and everyone must meet 20/40 vision in at least one eye, with or without corrective lenses. | Idaho Transportation Department: Driver's License and ID Required Documentschecked 2026-11-01 |

You may keep driving on an unexpired SIP after the six-month minimum.
