New Mexico permit practice test 5

Twenty harder questions: minimum speeds, HOV lanes, reversible lane signals, the provisional holding period, the vision standard, points, overtaking, school buses on divided roads, stopping distances, the sight distance rule, passing near hills, icy bridges, hydroplaning and truck braking. Every answer comes from the New Mexico Driver Manual (version 11.19.19) or the MVD's own pages. The real MVD knowledge test is passed with a score of 70 percent or better, but the MVD does not publish how many questions it has, so 20 questions is our own practice size: you need 14 correct (70 percent) to pass this set. Signs are part of the same test. The MVD states no time limit, and our sets have none.

A sample question

How do you use the four-second sight distance rule?

  • Count four seconds to a fixed object as far ahead as you can see; if you reach it first, slow down
  • Stay four seconds behind the car ahead, counting from when it passes a fixed object such as a sign
  • Signal four seconds before each turn or lane change so that other drivers have time to react
  • Look in your mirrors every four seconds and count four seconds before you change lanes

Marked when you take the test; the explanation appears in your review.
