OET Reading practice test 8 (Nursing)

A harder OET Reading test in the real format: three parts and 42 questions in 60 minutes. The Reading sub-test is the same for all twelve OET professions; this set is written around nursing work. Part A (questions 1 to 20) is the expeditious reading task: four short texts on managing hypoglycaemia in adult inpatients, with matching, short answer and sentence completion questions. In the real test Part A is collected after exactly 15 minutes, so try to finish it in that time. For Part A answers, use the exact words, numbers and spelling from the texts. Part B (questions 21 to 26) gives six short workplace texts, each with one three-option multiple-choice question; here the questions often test what a text implies rather than what it states. Part C (questions 27 to 42) has two longer texts, on alarm fatigue in intensive care and on deprescribing in older adults, each with eight four-option questions on detail, the writer's opinion and the purpose of a passage. Each correct answer earns one mark. OET converts the score out of 42 to a scale from 0 to 500; oet.com says test-takers awarded grade B (350) typically score at least 30 marks, although the boundary moves slightly from one test version to another. We therefore use 30 out of 42 as a rough grade B guide based on that statement; it is not an official OET raw pass mark.

The guideline indicates that, after the 15-minute check, observations during a unit

  • are needed only if there is a clinical reason.
  • must be repeated every 15 minutes until the unit ends.
  • can stop once the first unit has been completed.
