PTE Academic reading practice set 5

Fourteen PTE Academic reading questions on tides, the first postage stamps, glaciers, medieval farming, desert plants, public libraries, salt, volcanic islands, ancient lighthouses, tea, earthworms, recycling, the marathon and the first public museums. The set covers the two reading types not in sets 1 to 4: Reading and Writing Fill in the Blanks (drop-down gaps) and Re-order Paragraphs. It is untimed; the real Reading part is timed and scored from 10 to 90. Here each drop-down gap earns its own point, as on the real test, but a re-order item scores only when the whole order is right, whereas the real test gives partial credit.

14questions
—untimed
—no pass mark

Exam mode: timed, answers at the end, like the real test. Practice mode: untimed, the answer and explanation after each question.

  • As the Pacific Plate moves slowly north-west over this hot spot, magma breaks through the crust and builds a series of volcanoes.
  • This is why the islands become older, lower and more worn the farther they lie to the north-west.
  • The Hawaiian Islands lie in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, thousands of kilometres from the nearest edge of a tectonic plate.
  • Each volcano is gradually carried away from the source of its magma, so it becomes inactive and begins to erode.
  • Geologists explain their origin with the idea of a hot spot, a fixed area deep in the mantle where unusually hot rock rises towards the surface.

Marked when you take the test; the explanation appears in your review.
