PTE Academic listening practice set 8

Eighteen harder PTE Academic listening questions on ice cores, multitasking, the adult brain, why cities pay more, the first writing, a famous bridge collapse, errors in diagnosis, soil carbon, the Dutch tulip craze, light pollution, deep-sea vents and the history of the census, plus three dictation sentences. The set covers Multiple Choice (single and multiple answers), Fill in the Blanks, Highlight Correct Summary, Select Missing Word, Highlight Incorrect Words and Write from Dictation, with denser talks and closer options than set 6. It is untimed and in practice mode you can replay each recording; in the real test each recording plays once, and the Listening part is timed and scored from 10 to 90. Here Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers and Highlight Incorrect Words take off a point for each wrong choice, as on the real test, but a dictation sentence scores only when the whole sentence is right, whereas the real test gives a point for each correct word.

A sample question

Listen to the recording and answer the question. According to the speaker, why is premature closure hard for doctors to recognise?

  • Because doctors often lack the specialist knowledge needed to notice it
  • Because hospitals actively discourage junior doctors from questioning a diagnosis
  • Because it resembles the quick pattern recognition of experienced doctors
  • Because patients rarely describe their symptoms accurately

Marked when you take the test; the explanation appears in your review.
