SAT practice module 11: Reading and Writing

This is a harder Reading and Writing module, set at the level of the higher-difficulty second module that a strong first module unlocks on the adaptive digital SAT. You have 32 minutes for 27 questions, each built on its own short passage, in the real order: craft and structure, information and ideas, standard English conventions, then expression of ideas. Expect closer reading, subtler wrong answers and harder grammar. The SAT reports a scaled score rather than a pass or fail result, so no pass mark is set here.

A sample question

In the poem 'Winter Orchard,' the speaker walks through an apple orchard in January. A student claims that the speaker sees signs of future life in an orchard that appears to be dead. Which quotation from the poem most effectively illustrates the student's claim?

  • 'The branches rattle in the wind like bone, / and every path is frozen hard as stone.'
  • 'No bird has sung here since the leaves came down; / the farmer's cart has rumbled off to town.'
  • 'I walk the rows alone at close of day, / and count the trees, and turn, and go away.'
  • 'Yet underneath the bark, too small to see, / the buds are waiting, folded patiently.'
