SAT practice module 9: Reading and Writing
This is one Reading and Writing module in the digital SAT format, pitched like a first module with a mix of easier and medium questions; the real test has two modules in this section, and the second adapts to how you did on the first. You have 32 minutes for 27 questions, each built on its own short passage. The questions run in the real order: craft and structure, information and ideas, standard English conventions, then expression of ideas. The SAT reports a scaled score rather than a pass or fail result, so no pass mark is set here.
Exam mode: timed, answers at the end, like the real test. Practice mode: untimed, the answer and explanation after each question.

A sample question
A letter said to have been written by a sailor in 1792 describes a whale 'larger than the ship itself' seen off the coast of Chile. The letter bears the date 1792, but it is known only from a version first published by the sailor's grandson in 1851, and no earlier copy has been found. Because the grandson was known to embellish family stories, historians caution that ______ Which choice most logically completes the text?
- some details of the letter may not reflect what the sailor actually wrote.
- whales were rarely seen by sailors off the coast of Chile during the 1790s.
- the sailor probably never sailed anywhere near the coast of Chile.
- the letter must have been written in 1851 rather than in 1792.
