Colorado practice tests
Colorado's written permit test, the Driving Knowledge Test, covers road signs, driving under the influence, driving rules, safety rules and legal items from the Colorado Driver Handbook. You can take it online at home with a webcam (60 minutes allowed), in a driver license office, or at an approved driving school, in English or Spanish. The Colorado DMV does not publish the number of questions or the pass mark on the pages we checked. You can get an instruction permit from 15 after driver education. Our free Colorado practice sets use 25 questions each, including 5 sign questions with pictures, and we ask for 20 correct (80 percent) to pass; that size and mark are our own choice, not an official figure.

| Knowledge test | Driving Knowledge Test (written test); number of questions not publishedThe handbook says the questions cover the whole Driver Handbook, including road signs, driving under the influence, driving rules, safety rules and legal items. Signs are not a separate part. Neither the DMV pages we read nor the handbook gives the number of questions. Our practice sets use 25 questions, 20 on the rules and 5 on signs; that size is our own choice. | Colorado Driver Handbook (DR 2337), PDFchecked 2026-11-01 |

| Instruction permit rules | Supervisor aged 21 or older with a valid Colorado license, in the front passenger seatA valid out-of-state license with active military ID also qualifies. The permit is valid for three years or until your 21st birthday, whichever comes first. Under 18 you must hold it for 12 full months before the driving test, log at least 50 hours of supervised driving (10 at night) and, if under 16 1/2, complete 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with an approved driving school. Living more than 30 miles from a full-time driving school lets you replace those 6 hours with 12 extra logged hours (62 in all). | Colorado DMV: Get Your Colorado Permit and Driver License (Under 21)checked 2026-11-01 |
| Minor license restrictions | First 6 months: no passengers under 21 unless a parent or another licensed adult driver is in the car; next 6 months: one passenger under 21; no driving from midnight to 5 a.m. in the first yearSiblings may ride at any time, and passengers under 21 are allowed in a medical emergency. | What to bring | Proof of identity, two proofs of Colorado address, driver education completion (ages 15 to 16) and, under 18, an adult to sign the Affidavit of Liability (DR 2460)A school ID alone is not proof of identity. Under 21 without a government ID, a parent or legal guardian signs an Affidavit of Identity at the appointment and brings certified proof of guardianship. The handbook lists who may sign DR 2460 (a parent, stepparent, grandparent with power of attorney, legal guardian, spouse older than 18 or another responsible adult); the newer DMV permit page adds that the signer must be 21 or older with a valid Colorado license, and we follow the page. The signer accepts financial responsibility for crashes you cause; if they cannot attend, bring the form signed in front of a notary. Bring proof of passing if you tested online or at a school. You will take a vision test, give fingerprints and have your photo taken. | Colorado DMV: Get Your Colorado Permit and Driver License (Under 21)checked 2026-11-01 |
