Duolingo English Test format: how the adaptive test and scoring work
How the Duolingo English Test works: an adaptive test of about one hour taken at home, scores from 10 to 160, subscores, and results in about two days.
What the Duolingo English Test is
The Duolingo English Test, often shortened to the DET, is an English proficiency test you take online, at home, on your own computer. It takes about one hour from start to finish. Instead of separate papers for reading, listening, writing and speaking, it mixes short tasks from all four skills together, and many tasks test more than one skill at a time.
The test is adaptive. That means the questions change in difficulty depending on how you answer. Answer well, and the next questions get harder; struggle, and they get easier. The aim is to find your level quickly and accurately, which is why the test is much shorter than many traditional English exams.
Which score you need is set by the school, employer or program you are applying to. Check their requirements before you take the test, and check the official site, englishtest.duolingo.com, for the current format and rules.
The test at a glance
| Stage | About how long | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Setup and introduction | About 5 minutes | Check your camera, microphone and ID, and read the rules |
| Adaptive questions | About 45 minutes | A mix of short reading, listening, writing and speaking tasks, plus interactive sections |
| Writing and speaking samples | About 10 minutes | An open writing response and an open speaking response, shared with the institutions that receive your results |
These times are approximate. Each individual question has its own time limit shown on screen, and you cannot pause the test once it has started.
Exam tip: because the test is adaptive, getting harder questions is a good sign, not a bad one. Do not panic if a task feels difficult; it usually means you are doing well.
How adaptive testing feels
Many test takers find the experience unusual at first:
- Questions come one at a time, and you usually cannot go back.
- Tasks switch quickly between skills, so you might read, then listen, then speak in the space of a few minutes.
- Two people taking the test on the same day will see different questions.
- Every task is timed, often with a short limit.
This is why practice matters. Knowing each task type in advance means you spend your time answering, not working out what the screen is asking.
Scores from 10 to 160
Your overall result is a single score on a scale from 10 to 160, reported in steps of five. A higher number means stronger English.
| Score range | Rough meaning |
|---|---|
| 10 to 55 | Basic English for simple, familiar situations |
| 60 to 95 | Can handle everyday tasks and some longer texts |
| 100 to 125 | Comfortable with most everyday and academic English |
| 130 to 160 | Strong, flexible English across a wide range of situations |
These bands are our plain-language summary for orientation only. The official score descriptions on the Duolingo English Test site are the ones institutions use.
Subscores
Alongside the overall score, your report shows subscores that break your performance down into areas of English ability. Because many tasks combine skills, subscores have been grouped and named in different ways over time. Check the official site for the subscores that appear on the current score report and what each one covers.
Results in about two days
Your results are usually ready within about two days of finishing the test. Before results are released, each test session is reviewed to check that the rules were followed. If the review finds a problem, the result may not be certified.
Once you have your results, you can share them with institutions through your account. Results are typically valid for a fixed period, so check the official site for the current validity rules and how sharing works.
Taken online, at home
You need:
- a computer with a working front-facing camera, microphone and speakers;
- a quiet, private, well-lit room where you will not be disturbed;
- a reliable internet connection;
- a valid government-issued photo ID.
The test is monitored through your camera and microphone, and there are strict rules about looking away, using notes and other people entering the room. Our guide to preparing for the test covers these rules in detail.
Exam tip: do a full practice run on the same computer and in the same room you will use for the real test. Technical surprises on test day cause more stress than any question type.
